A new initiative to encourage sport horse breeders has been launched recently by Horse Sport Ireland (HSI). The inaugural Sport Horse Foal Championship, which offers a prize fund of €30,000, aims to identify, evaluate and reward breeders who have bred a foal that has the potential to be competitive at the highest international level in the disciplines of show jumping or eventing.
There will be five regional championships held in July and August, with separate sections for potential show jumping foals and potential eventing foals. A fund of €4,000 will be on offer at each venue, from where four foals will be selected for the final.
A pot of €10,000 will be on offer for the final and prizes will be presented for the best show jumping type colt and filly, and the best eventing type colt and filly. There will also be a special prize for the overall best traditionally-bred foal.
Commenting on the championship, Alison Corbally, HSI Director of Breeding and Programmes, said: "The new Sport Horse Foal Championship is a very interesting initiative and the separate sections for show jumping and eventing foals will encourage breeders to think about the potential market for their foals. With such a generous prize fund on offer we're hoping that the championship will generate a lot of interest and support from breeders".
