Horrible weather conditions drive plain cattle prices down €10-40/hd
Friesian and store prices fall by as much as €40/hd
The country's atrocious weather conditions have begun to bite at the mart trade. Prices fell by €10-40/hd across the board this week, with plain animals suffering the biggest drops.
Well-fleshed steers generally sold for €2.00-2.50/kg, with plainer types selling from €1.79-2.00/kg. Good quality lighter weanlings made €2.50-3.00/kg, while heavier quality lots sold for €2.20-2.75/kg. Well-fleshed cull cows held firm, as did suckler cows with calves at foot.
Kilkenny Mart had 650 head of stock at its sale. Prices for beef cattle, plainer stores and Friesian bullocks were back by €10-15/hd, while store heifer prices fell by €10-20/hd.
Heavy continental steers sold for €2.08-2.50/kg and plainer lots sold for €1.95-2.10/kg. Stores under 500kg made €2.25-2.93/kg. Beef heifers sold for €2.00-2.49/kg while butchers heifers moved at €1.95-2.39/kg. Stores made from €2.10-2.47/kg, with a top price of €3.15/kg paid for a 270kg Belgian Blue sold for €850. Prices for Continental cull cows ran from €1.80-2.32/kg. Friesian culls made from €1.30-1.90/kg. Sucklers sold for €1,000-1,700 each.
Ballinakill mart reported a quieter trade all round, with most of the cattle back by about €30-40/hd. However some good store bullocks still made up to €1,000 with their weight.
In general, heavy steers made €1.90-2.70/kg, forward stores made €2.10-3.00/kg and lighter lots sold for €1.95-3.10/kg. Weanling bulls sold for €2.15-2.85/kg, while heifers sold for €1.35-2.05/kg. Beef heifers sold for €2.00-2.45/kg and stores made €1.80-2.25/kg.
Balla Mart had 756 cattle on offer, where quality stock met a steady trade but lighter plainer bullocks were slightly tougher to move. Heavy bullocks sold for €1.74-2.50/kg, while lighter types made from €1.47-2.90/kg. Some quality heavy heifers on offer made €1.67-2.89/kg. Forward store heifers made from €1.60-3.56/kg.
