Hoofcare initiative launched
A new hoofcare advice and care service has been launched by the Farm Relief Services (FRS).
FRS Hoofwatch is a combination of the current hoofcare treatment service offered by FRS and a new recording device used by FRS hoof care technicians to record hoof ailments and treatments administered to each animal.
The FRS technician treats each cow as usual and then enters details of lameness and treatment for each hoof inspected and gives the farmer a printout of all details related to the inspection.
The same information is sent to ICBF to update the farmer's herd record.
The information can then be used by the farmer to make herd management decisions. It can help with choosing which cows to breed from and in tracking lameness trends in the herd, as well as providing advice on how to reduce lameness in the herd. All information collected is confidential and data protected.
Individual lameness reports will be available online to Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) HerdPlus members or on request from FRS so all participating farmers can use their data.
National data will be analysed by the ICBF to identify bloodlines which are more prone to incidence of lameness in order to help strengthen herd health for Ireland in the future.
