high value of piemontese

Top prices of up to €3.29/kg are being paid for purebred Piemontese weanlings destined for the lucrative Italian market, the Irish Piemontese Cattle Society says.

"Again this year we have seen a rise in registrations and an increase in our membership as farmers are realising from recent prices gained at marts the great export potential of both the crossbred and purebred Piemontese animal," explains Helena Fitzgerald-Cody from the Piemontese Society.

"The Italian market knows the true value of the high-yielding, lean, super-tender beef which the breed supplies. These animals are exactly what that market demands, and so they are able to achieve premium prices as weanlings do," she said.

In order to highlight this fact, the society's stand (Row Q, Stand 483) will contain a selection of bulls, along with details of the top prices achieved.

The display will include pedigree and crossbred cattle, allowing farmers to see the breed first hand and talk to the Piemontese breeders and council members about their experience.

Visitors will also be in with a chance to win an 18-month-old bull valued at €2,000. Raffle entry costs €2 per line or three lines for €5.

Finally there will be a special sale on some Piemontese AI straws for the duration of the Ploughing. Straws that are ordered and paid for during the next three days will receive a substantial discount, with some straws reduced to almost cost price.
