Heifers and steers are on the up

Heavy steers and butcher heifers were up last week as were weanling bulls and the heavy weanling heifers over 400kg. The lighter weanling heifers and the store and factory heifers were down slightly.

Heavy Continental bullocks were generally making from €2.00 to €2.60/kg. Plainer lots sold from €1.30-1.80/kg. Stores made from €1.80-2.80/kg. The best of the bull weanlings were selling for €2.70-3.30/kg. The main run of bulls made from €2.00-2.70/kg. Beef heifers sold from €2.00-2.50/kg while stores ranged from €1.80-2.70/kg.

Good weanling heifers were making from €2.50-3.00/kg with the rest selling from €1.60-2.40/kg. Well fleshed, heavy cull cows made up to and over €2/kg. Plainer types and store cows made from €1-1.60/kg. Depending on age and quality, suckler cows in-calf made from €1,200-1,800.

At Balla Mart, the steers were selling from €1.32-2.85/kg. Heavy heifers sold from €1.73-2.85/kg with the forward stores making from €2.02-2.98/kg. The well-made heavy weanling bulls made from €2.50-3.56/kg. Plainer types traded at €1.52-2.00/kg. Lighter lots made from €1.52-3.12/kg.

The best of the weanling heifers sold for €2.40-3.25/kg. Poorer quality lots sold back to €1.58/kg. A big turnout of 244 cows saw the in-calf sucklers hit a high of €1,800 while the culls topped out at €1,760 for a 945kg, seven-year-old Simmental cross.

Heavy steers between 500-600kg in Kilkenny Mart were making from €1.60-2.62/kg. The lighter types were selling for €1.50-2.72/kg. Beef heifers sold from €1.70-2.49/kg. Butcher types made from €2.00-2.32/kg. Stores traded for €1.90-2.64/kg. Continental cull cows sold for €1.50-2.05/kg while the Friesian cull cows made from €0.80-1.75/kg.

The trade was quieter at Dowra Mart on Saturday last for the 530 cattle on offer. Bullocks over 600kg made from €2.00-2.30/kg while the stores sold from €1.80-2.50/kg. Weanling bulls over 450kg were selling for €1.90-2.40/kg.

The lighter bulls made from €2.00-2.80/kg. Forward store heifers traded from €1.90-2.30/kg. Lighter stores were making from €1.70-2.60/kg. A few quality lots suitable for breeding made up to €2.80/kg. Weanling heifers were selling from €1.60-2.80/kg. Cull cows ranged from €1.70-2.00/kg for the top cows while the older thinner cows made from €0.80-1.50/kg.

Carnew Mart had 650hd of cattle on offer and reported an improved trade for all categories. Prices were up by €20/hd. Beef and forward stores were making €650-1,010 over their weight.

Lighter stores were selling for €350-830 over. Finished heifers sold for €550-1,010 with the €/kg while the stores made from €350-770 over the weight. Weanling bulls ranged from €350-850 with their weight.

Exporters and midland farmer buyers were active at Ballymote Mart. Light store bullocks under 400kg traded at €250-525 over the weight. Steers from 400-600kg moved from €400-720 with the €/kg while heavier lots made up to €715 over. The lighter weanling bulls were selling for €250-560 over their weight.

Weanlings in excess of 300kg made from €320-620 with their weight. In the heifer section, the majority of the lots over 500kg sold for €420-660 with their weight. Lighter lots were selling from €280-570 over the weight. Heavy weanling heifers sold from €300-445 with their weight. The light heifer under 200kg made from €270-350 over the €/kg. Cull cows for feeding made from €140-200.

At Tuam Mart, the continental steers over 600kg made from €2.14-2.47/kg. Continental stores sold from €2.15-2.48/kg. Weanling bulls weighing 300-400kg were selling for €2.30-2.80/kg with the lighter types between 250-300kg making from €2.20-2.95/kg.

Heifers between 400-500kg made from €2.00-2.23/kg. Continental weanling heifers of 300-400kg sold for €2.23-2.59/kg with the lighter lots making from €2.19-2.82/kg. The good cull cows made up to €1,580 while in-calf sucklers sold to €1,490. Sucklers with a calf at-foot made from €1,300-1,500/unit.

Up in Raphoe Mart, the best of the heavy bulls over 600kg were selling for €760-1,070 with their weight. Beef bullocks sold for €595-1,130 over their weight. Stores made from €305-655 with the €/kg. Well fleshed heifers moved at €510-885 with the weight. Stores made from €250-750 over.

At Mountbellew Mart, store cull cows sold from €700-1,000. Well fleshed Continental cull cows from 600-800kg were making between €1,200-1,500. Quality weanling heifers sold in a price range of €700-850 with the best of the bulls selling for €700-975.
