Heaviest cattle enjoy strong trade as lighter lots struggle across the board

The past week has seen the heaviest cattle in each category enjoy a strong trade with the opposite happening for the lighter lots across the board. Quality forward store heifers were making from €2.20-2.60/kg.

The heavy steers moved in a range from €2.00-2.55/kg. Well fleshed cull cows were making upwards of €2/kg. Plainer store cows sold back to €1.30/kg with poor Friesian stores just making just €1/kg. The majority of the weanlings sold at between €2.00-2.60/kg. Sucklers with a calf at foot were making from €1,000-1,800/unit.

Kilkenny reported a steady trade for their relatively small turnout of 500 cattle. Heavy steers over 600kg were making from €1.80-2.56/kg or €650-1,070 with their weight. Forward stores ranged from €2.02-2.57/kg or €500-910 with the weight. Lots under 500kg moved at €1.30-2.90/kg or from €220-885 over the €/kg. Factory heifers sold for €2.00-2.60/kg with butcher types making from €2.10-2.36/kg. Store prices ran from €1.80-2.48/kg reflecting €350-605 over their weight. Continental cull cows made from €1.40-2.23/kg.

Dowra Mart had 330 cattle on offer last Saturday. Trade was a shade quieter for all classes of cattle. Forward store heifers over 500kg made from €2.20-2.60/kg with the lighter stores making from €2.00-2.70/kg. Weanling heifers sold from €1.80-2.70/kg. Bullocks over 550kg were selling from €2.30-2.60/kg while lighter lots made from €1.80-2.70/kg.

Numbers were up at Ballinakill Mart where cattle met a good trade. Lighter store bullocks and good quality heifer prices were improved by €10-30/hd. Heavy steers were making from €2.15-2.75/kg. Forward stores sold for €2.00-2.80/kg with lighter types making from €1.90-3.00/kg. Beef heifers traded at €1.95-2.68/kg. The stores moved at €1.70-2.50/kg. Weanling bull and heifers ranged from €1.75-2.60/kg. Prices for cull cows varied from €1.30-2.00/kg.

Balla Mart held their end of month Continental sale and had 797 lots on offer. Trade was good with demand lively for most types of cattle. Prices for the heavy heifers were up by €20-30/hd on the previous week due to the demand from large feedlot buyers.

Trade for the bullocks was steady in the main but the lighter plainer types were up a tad and making around €600-700 with their weight or from €1.40-2.79/kg. Lighter heifers under 400kg were making €1.62-2.96/kg.

Heavier lots made from €1.60-2.65/kg. The strong weanling heifers moved at €2.28-2.39/kg with the lighter types making from €1.95-2.50/kg. The best of the light bull weanlings sold up to €2.72/kg. The heavier weanlings made from €1.52-2.46/kg. A nine-year-old Charolais cow with a Limousin bull calf at foot topped the sucklers at €1,480. The best of the cull cows, an eight year-old Charolais weighing 785kg made €1,790.

A good entry with 700 cattle and 50 suck calves in Carnew Mart saw trade and prices unchanged from the previous week with very strong demand for weanling bulls suitable for export. Beef and forward store bullocks were selling for €750-1,050 over the weight.

Stores made from €300-850 over while the weanling bulls ranged from €450-1,060 with the €/kg. Beef heifers sold for €650-1,050 with their weight. Stores moved at €250-750 over the €/kg. Cull cows were making from €100-850 over.

Trade in Ballymote was firm with the best of the demand for the cull cows and the forward store bullocks and heifers. Bullocks under 400kg were making from €320-470 over the €/kg. Lots between 400-500kg made from €450-700 with their weight.

Heifers under 400kg were making from €250-450 over while the heavier types made from €400-680 with the €/kg. In the weanling section, the 300-400kg bulls moved at €300-470 with their weight. The lighter bulls sold for €200-450 over. Weanling heifers ranged from €200-500 with their weight.

Cows with calves at foot on offer at Mayo/Sligo Mart were selling from €1,000-1,810. A lively trade for quality cull cows resulted in prices of up to €2.16/kg paid for well fleshed lots over 600kg. In the suck calf ring, the coloured bulls were selling for €100-320 with the heifers making from €150-295. Angus bulls sold for €120-270. The heifers made from €70-165.

Top class bulls over 600kg were making from €565-1,105 over the weight up in Raphoe. Stores sold for €785-905 over. Beef heifers made €640-1,050 with the €/kg with the stores selling for €320-725 over.

At Tuam Mart, the Continental steers over 400kg made from €2.22-2.62/kg. Heavy coloured weanling bulls sold for €2.44-2.58/kg with the 300-500kg types making from €2.51-3.13/kg. Lighter lots sold for €2.02-2.81/kg.

Store heifers up to 500kg were selling for €2.22-2.78/kg while heavier lots moved at €1.96-2.38/kg.

A number of the better quality cull cows exceeded the €2/kg mark with a top price/kg of €2.94/kg or €1,600 paid for a 545kg Limousin cow. Sucklers with a calf at foot sold from €1,350-1,510/unit.
