The Department of Agriculture has insisted that it carried out five inspections of the Grannagh meat plant during the first quarter of the year but no problems were found with the grading machine.

A spokesperson confirmed that a minimum of 80 carcasses were inspected on each occasion and the overall results were within the tolerances approved by the EU when authorising the use of mechanical grading here.

The Department pointed out the factory is responsible to monitor the accuracy of the machine and employs a person for this purpose.

In response, senior management at Dawn Meats said that, after monitoring the grading, they asked the Department to verify the accuracy of the machine.

The Department advised the company that they were within EU parameters.
