Gerry Bird remembered in new award
The Bird family, the OCAE Group, Irish Tillage Consultants Association (ITCA) and the Arable Farmers Society (AFS) have launched the inaugural Gerry Bird Merit Award 2013 in association with the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science Undergraduate Professional Work Experience Programme.
A former columnist with the Farming Independent, Gerry Bird, who died suddenly earlier this year, was well known and respected throughout the agricultural community and in particular in the tillage sector.
Throughout his career, he made a huge contribution in educating young and old. The merit award is designed to continue and expand his generosity and spirit through the education and training of undergraduate students.
The OCAE group is an agricultural and environmental consultancy and includes IAS Laboratories, one of the country's main agricultural labs.
Gerry worked on a daily basis with his colleagues in both companies. The ITCA is the representative organisation for private tillage consultants. The ITCA was Gerry's brainchild and he was chairman at the time of his passing.
The AFS is a group of Gerry's farmer clients who wish to acknowledge the role he played in their lives and business.
Professional Work Experience placements will be offered to students seeking practical work experience in the soil science and crop production disciplines. The chosen candidates will gain a broad range of experience in agricultural consultancy, research, laboratory training and crop husbandry. The successful candidate will spend three months working with the sponsors.
