Gene Ireland over-subscribed

ICBF has stopped signing up herds to its Gene Ireland programme of dairy test bulls due to a shortage of semen.

The breeding organisation said that due to "unprecedented demand" they had stopped taking on new herds.

In all, 721 herds have signed up for a total of 24,867 straws.

The sudden increase in demand may be linked to the roll-out of a new trial to test the viability of fresh sexed semen.

Farmers are only able to access the 24,000 semen doses that will be available on the trial through the Gene Ireland programme.

ICBF has asked farmers who still want to join the programme to make contact with them so that they can be put on a waiting list if additional semen becomes available.
