A large midlands merchant has been conned out of €18,000 of bale-wrap in a credit card scam.

The merchant said that a Birmingham-based gang used stolen credit card details to order 200 rolls of Silotite black plastic rolls last week.

While the credit card details went through without problem, the payments were not cleared before the goods were loaded on trucks.

"Obviously we need to change our procedure here in relation to credit cards, but we'd just be fearful that the same thing could happen to other merchants," said the company's boss. He believes that the plastic is destined for the North. "Just be careful if you are offered plastic at much less than the going rate of €90/roll.

"The last time this happened to us with fertiliser, the farmers involved ended up having to pay twice for the product - once to the criminals, and a second time to the rightful owner," he said.
