If you ever dreamed of owning your own castle, this is your chance. Smarmore Castle is located off the N2, about 7km south of Ardee, Co Louth, and 9km north of Colon. It is set on 15ac and is a ready-made leisure facility.

The castle is on the market and being sold by Savills at a guide price of €1,550,000.

Dating from around 1320, the residence is a fine period house steeped in history and charm.

The accommodation includes six ensuite bedrooms and a family suite. The rooms are bright, spacious and presented in fine condition throughout, having been well maintained over the years.

The entrance hall is a large, bright room, with an elegant stairway leading to the drawing room upstairs.

The oldest part, the tower, is located along the east wing and leads towards the large kitchen and dining area that is currently let out as a restaurant.

The main house and castle have been run as an upmarket guest house over the past number of years.

Outside, there are lots of useful stone outbuildings in the adjoining courtyard. These buildings, until early last year, were mainly used in conjunction with a leisure club, which incorporated the 22x7m indoor heated swimming pool, steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi and children's pool. It also included the gym, toilets and changing rooms, all in good condition, along with some stables.
