First sexed semen trial calves due

The first calves from the massive 16,000 cow sexed semen trial that took place across hundreds of herds last April and May are due to hit the ground in Cork during the next seven days.

"We're expecting the first of 7,000-8,000 female calves to arrive from next Monday," said the ICBF geneticist, Andrew Cromie.

There was close to a 50pc conception rate from the fresh and frozen semen that had a pre-determined sex courtesy of new technology from the US.

Scans of 4,000 of the cows proved that the sexing technology was 90pc accurate.

Approximately 25,000 straws of the sexed semen remain available for purchase and are selling well through the main semen distributors.
