Farms BETTER off €27k on average
Beef farms in the Teagasc BETTER beef farm programme have shown that cattle producers could pocket an extra €9,000 per year by reducing costs and increasing output.
The 16 BETTER beef farms recorded a remarkable €27,000 average increase in gross margin between 2008 and 2011.
Speaking at the Agricultural Science Association (ASA) beef conference last week, Teagasc beef expert Paul Crosson said the improvement was driven by higher stocking rates, earlier finishing and better grassland management.
These combined to increase output by 8,000kg lw/ha.
The next phase of the BETTER farm project will see up to 120 satellite farms across the country join the programme in 2012.
