Farmers and anglers in Leenane area of counties Galway and Mayo have put in a tender to lease the local Erriff Fishery.

It is understood that the Erriff and District Community Group (EDCG) - which includes 24 land owners and members of the local angling club - has submitted a business plan with Inland Fisheries Ireland for the tender.

If the group is successful, it would be the first such venture of its kind in Ireland or Britain.

The EDCG was formed in 2013, with the aim of tendering the licence to run Aasleagh Lodge and the Erriff Fishery.

The EDCG proposes to contract the management to Delphi Lodge and Fishery and run the enterprise to achieve the following objectives:

l To ensure that Aasleagh Lodge and the River Erriff remains an asset to the local community;

l Continue to provide an angling facility for existing visitors to Aasleagh Lodge and Erriff Fishery;

l Promote Aasleagh Lodge and Erriff Fishery to new business;
