Export buyers to the fore in Roscommon

BIG demand from Northern Ireland breeders boosted the trade at the Irish Shorthorn Cattle Society Beef Show and Sale at Roscommon Mart with over 40pc of animals sold for export.

These included the top price Springing Heifer - a Malton Zenith daughter exhibited by Alan and Frank Gibbons, Strokestown - which sold to for €3,100, while the Male Champion of the Show, Orkney Fresh Prince - bred and exhibited by Henry Dudley, Templemore - sold for €2,700 to a northern buyer.

The Female Championship was awarded to a maiden heifer - Ricketstown Rosette 177 bred by the Kelly family from Carlow and later sold for €2,500 to a Galway breeder.
