Ewe trade maintains strength
FEMALE sheep continue to be a very strong trade whether they are ewe hoggets, ewes with lambs or cull ewes. Limited supplies are helping to keep the lamb trade fairly solid.
Mountbellew had a larger number of sheep on offer than the previous week. Fleshy type lambs were an easier trade, selling for €45-54 over the weight. Store lambs were a good trade, with plenty of farmers for the lighter types and those sold in a price range of €65-80/head. Stag ewes were an excellent trade, especially for the heavy lots, with a top price of €130/hd, and selling from here down to €65/hd for the thinner ewes.
A large number of ewes with lambs at foot also met with a very strong trade. Ewes with twin lambs at foot made up to €236/hd, while ewes with singles sold to €200. Quality ewe hoggets made €136/hd.
Sheep numbers were similar to the previous week at Dowra Mart, with more store lambs appearing. The trade was quieter, with only the good stores and some quality pens of breeding hoggets holding their own in price.
Young ewes with lambs at foot made from €140-180/hd for ewes with singles, and ones with doubles made up to €210 each. Older ewes with lambs made from €65 to €100 each. The best of the lambs were back on last week and made from €80 to €95 each, with the store lambs making from €55 to €75 each.
There was an improved trade in Tullow Mart with most lambs up €1-2/hd to a price range of €91-130 reflecting €50-68 over. Cull ewes were up €10-15, selling for €30-127/hd.
Wexford Farmers' Co-Op reported a good solid trade for all classes of sheep, with 915 on offer last Wednesday. Prices were fully maintained and, once again, best demand was for cull ewes.
Spring lambs sold for €94-115/hd or €55-69 over the weight.
