EU recover €34m in fraud payments
Some €34m in fraudulent farm payments was recovered by the EU last year, according to a report by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF).
This figure is almost three times the sum recovered in 2010. Nearly 20pc of all ongoing and operational cases by the OLAF dealt with the agricultural sector.
Enquiries that dealt with agriculture accounted for 89 out of 463 cases. Ireland is the only country in which not a single case has undergone judicial proceedings. Romania has topped the list at 225 judicial cases since 2006.
The €34m is overshadowed by the amounts recovered for structural funds at €524.7m.
One single case in the Italian region of Calabria reclaimed €389m on funding for road works.
