English set to replace McEntee

The Taoiseach is to put his first choice for a new Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture before the Cabinet today.

The post has been left vacant since the death of Meath TD Shane McEntee four months ago.

The two front runners for the post over the last number of weeks are Wicklow TD and farmer, Andrew Doyle and Meath West TD, Damien English.

However, sources close to the Government say that Deputy English looks set to get the nod at today's meeting.

The Fine Gael man was the youngest TD elected in the 2002 general elections.

He studied accountancy and currently chairs the Oireachtas Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Committee.
