A County Dublin farmer is thanking Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow for boosting his business - thanks to her love of all things Kale.

Farmer Christopher Keane, from Oldtown in Co Dublin, told RTE Radio One's Ray D'Arcy how the Ironman star has helped boost his business.

"Well it all came about when she started saying she was eating kale as a health food, and then everyone started to follow her trend and start eating kale, using it in smoothies, and in juicing and in kale crisps and everything with it," he said.

Kale is Christopher's main crop, and thanks to Gwyneth's endorsement of a vegetable most of us will mix up with a head of cabbage, demand for kale has skyrocketed by 300pc.

"There is a huge demand for it," he explained.

"Before it was only really eaten at, I suppose, Halloween and people would us it in colcannon potatoes.

"Now it seems to be just used for everything - smoothies, juicing, kale crisps, the whole lot."

Kale is high in iron and has lots of nutrients, and would be bigger than a head of cabbage with longer stalks.

Two years ago, Gwyneth spoke about the benefits of kale as well giving details of a kale juice she takes.

Christopher agreed with Ray when he asked if Gwyneth's endorsement changed his fortunes.

"Yes it has. Before it was just a one or two weeks blitz for Halloween, same as pumpkins.

"Now the demand for it is for 12 months of the year," he said.

And Gwyneth has also convinced Christopher of it's benefits - he's now drinking kale smoothies.

"You wouldn't even taste it now if you put it into a smoothie," he added.
