Distance learning class on offer for breeders

Discussions are under way within Teagasc about running a distance-learning Horse Breeding and Management course for interested breeders.

The aim of the course will be to equip breeders with the most up-to-date knowledge to understand the principles of horse breeding and managing mares and youngstock.

The course content will cover setting breeding objectives, costing, mare and stallion selection, pre-breeding and post-breeding management, stud records and artificial insemination.

The course will also cover foaling, care of the newborn foal, care of orphan foals and weaning.

As a distance-learning course, the programme will involve limited class contact time, but all information will be provided to participants to study at home in their own time.

There will be ongoing interaction with the course co-ordinator throughout the duration of the programme and a field trip to a stud farm will be included at the end of the course.

Breeders interested in securing a place on the proposed course should contact Teagasc equine specialist Wendy Conlon on 087 9879083 or wendy.conlon@teagasc.ie
