Online applications have opened for the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) and Greening Payment Scheme, the Department of Agriculture has confirmed.

Close to €1.2bn will be paid out under the two schemes to almost 130,000 farmers this year and over 80,000 applications are expected to be submitted on iNet or the online system.

Minister Coveney accepted that this year's application presented more challenges for farmers because of the greening requirements demanded by the new CAP which delivered a 30pc top-up to the BPS.

Minister Coveney said that once the system was up and running, the Department would be holding public information meetings, with farmers having ono-to-one access to officials.

The Department has commenced issuing maps for arable parcels, with all landscape features (hedgerows, drains and buffer strips) indentified. These maps are accompanied by a comprehensive manual on the greening requirements.

Anyone planning to use the online facility can make enquiries via www.agfood.ie or contact the Helpdesk at Lo-call 0761 064424 or 1890 252 118.
