The race for the presidency of the Irish Farmers' Association has taken a new twist as one of the candidates who failed to secure enough support has called for an emergency meeting.

Carlow IFA chairman Derek Deane stated a technical difficulty prevented him from submitting his nominations by the deadline.

Mr Deane said he received his vital sixth nomination from Monaghan chairman Brian Treanor before deadline but a technical problem prevented the email from going through. A spokesman for the IFA refused to comment.
