Colemans on hand to get you going again in snowfalls

Bruce Lett

PJ Coleman and Sons Plant Hire is based just outside Bunclody, on the Carlow side, overlooking Kildavin.

Owned and run by Paddy Coleman, the firm has historically hired equipment into and worked for Carlow County Council.

With work now a bit thinner on the ground, last year's snow was, in some respects, welcome for Paddy.

"Last year we hired two snowploughs and fitted them to our tractors, ready for clearing the roads for Carlow County Council," Paddy said.

Plenty of snow fell, which kept Paddy's firm busy.

"We were out 24 hours a day last winter for weeks," he said.

This year, Paddy is again anticipating snow and has kitted out four of his tractors with snowploughs bought from Dermot Redmond Engineering Ltd.

On the rear, the tractors tow gritters to spread salt or grit on the roads after clearing them.

Capable of clearing almost 3m in one pass, the snowploughs are fitted to two McCormick's, a Valtra and a Claas tractor.

The blade can be raised and lowered hydraulically, plus angled left or right. A thick rubber-edging strip is in contact with the ground and protects the blade from being damaged on collision with an obstacle such as reflective cats' eyes in the road.

Paddy has fitted lights and flasher units on both top corners of the snowplough blades so the tractor drivers can see what they are doing and motorists can see the snowplough.

"You'd want all of those lights, especially at night so motorists can see you with the wide snow plough," Paddy said.

"While we hope we are not going to get any snow, we are at the same time banking on it this year.

"If it snows, we will travel any distance within reason to clear snow and grit if needed, for private individuals or otherwise."

Paddy can be contacted on 053 937 7215 or 086 257 0423.
