co-op chiefs back youth

The initiative of a Co Offaly supplier has paved the way for a ring-fenced seat for young farmers on the governing body of Arrabawn Co-op.

Ronan Feighery from Ferbane tabled two motions at the Nenagh AGM seeking a seat on the co-op's representative committee and a seat on the board for a suitably qualified young farmer under 40.

Both motions were carried without opposition.

Mr Feighery runs a 70-cow unit and is a member of the national executive of Macra Na Feirme, which welcomed the Arrabawn move.

Macra president Alan Jagoe said it set a marker for other co-ops to encourage and facilitate young farmers to play an active role in the development of the co-operative business.

"I commend the co-op for its progressive thinking," Mr Jagoe said.
