Brisk trading but steers prices drop by 1-7c/kg as heifers hold their own


Individual mart reports suggested brisk trading, and this was probably true over the past week given that prices have been so strong recently. But the Ringside table shows the majority of categories experiencing a drop in prices. Steers were back by 1-7c/kg. Lots under 400kg were selling for €2.40-2.90/kg. Lots between 400-600kg moved at €2.15-2.65/kg, while heavier steers sold for €2.10-2.50/kg.

Plainer types made from €1.80-1.90/kg. The heavy heifers managed to hold their own and, on occasion, show a slight improvement. Prices ranged from €2.30-2.60/kg. The 400-600kg lots were making from €2.30-2.70/kg. Lighter heifers moved at €2.40-2.90/kg.

Ennis had a big turnout of over 1,000 head and a steady trade. Suck calf numbers showed a large increase. Friesian bull calves were an easier trade and making from €70-152 in the main. Stronger lots made up to €245. Continental heifer calves sold to a tops of €525, while the bulls made up to €460. Dairy cows ranged from €1,020-1,500. Sucklers with a calf at foot peaked at €2,045. In-calf sucklers sold to €1,640.

Calves met a strong trade in Kilrush. Friesian bull calves made from €100-172. Belgian Blue calves peaked at €375. Cull cows made from €1.46-1.71/kg. An entry of whitehead suckler cows made from €1,200-1,500.

Top class bulls over 600kg up in Raphoe sold for €715-1,020 over the weight. Store bullocks were making from €400-910 over. Beef heifers sold for €575-910 with the weight while the stores made from €400-915 over. Cull cows prices ranged from €700-1,480.

Dowra had 750 Cattle on offer last Saturday. Trade was very strong for all classes. Weanling heifers under 300kg were selling for €2.30-3.70/kg, while those between 300-400kg made from €2.00-3.30/kg. Lots weighing from 400-550kg sold for €1.90-2.90/kg. Heavier types made from €2.10-2.70/kg.

The lighter weanling bulls varied from €2.20-4.40/kg. The 300-400kg lots made from €2.00-3.40/kg. A big entry of heavy bulls made from €2.20-2.90/kg. Store bullocks under 500kg moved at €2.00-2.75/kg. Bullocks over this weight ranged from €1.90-2.60/kg.

Trade was described as brisk for the 1,000 head at Carnew mart. Beef and forward store bullocks were making from €750-1,100 with their weight. Lighter stores made from €550-1,060 over the weight. Friesian bullocks were commanding from €300-630 over the €/kg. Weanling bulls moved at €500-900 over the weight. Beef heifers made from €600-1,050 over. Stores sold for €450-850 with their weight.

Ballinakill had 400 cattle on offer. Quality may not have been as good as previous weeks, but a strong turnout of customers ensured prices remained firm. The heavy steers were selling for €2.00-2.75/kg. Forward stores varied from €2.00-3.25/kg, while the light continental stores sold for €2.20-3.40/kg. Heifers fit for slaughter were making from €2.10-2.45/kg. Weanlings ranged from €2.00-3.15/kg. Suckler cow prices ran from €1,250-1,770. Cull cows moved at €1.25-2.15/kg.

Beef and forward heifers sold to a demanding trade, with factory agents very active to secure good beef lots at Tullow mart. Prices varied from €680-1,080 with the weight. Stores made from €350-800 over. The heavier bullocks were selling for €780-1,120 with the €/kg. Their special continental sale that will include weanlings takes place next Friday, February 27 alongside the cattle sale.

A bigger sale of 860 cattle in Kilkenny met with continued demand, especially for the better quality stores. Heavy steers over 600kg made from €600-1,085 over the weight or €1.60-2.55/kg. The 500-600kg lots moved at €1.90-2.70/kg. Bullocks of 400-500kg sold for €1.60-2.90/kg, or €350-810 with the €/kg.

Over in Maam Cross, the steers were making from €2.18-2.68/kg. Heifers moved at €2.62-3.65/kg. Weanling prices ran from €2.55-4.05/kg. Cull cows sold for €1.35-2.58/kg. Sucklers with a calf at foot varied from €1,115-1,900.

Balla had over 800hd for sale, with 250 of them being bullocks. Stores up to 400kg were selling at €600-700 with the weight, or €2.45-3.88/kg. Heavier lots were making from €1.76-2.97/kg. Heifers were up by €20-40/hd. The store heifers sold for €1.95-3.70/kg. Heavier types moved at €1.69-3.39/kg.
