Biotricity defers straw purchase

Hopes of a strong price for straw this year took a further blow when Biotricity announced it would not be purchasing 30,000t of straw for its plant in Rhode, Co Offaly.

Construction delays for biomass electricity plant made it necessary to defer purchases of straw feedstock for this year, according to the company.

It had intended to purchase 30,000t of straw, at an average price of €14.50 per 8x4x3 square bale or around €62/t at 14.5pc moisture (delivered price).

CEO Declan Kennedy said the delays were outside the company's control but they did not threaten the future of the plant.

"The Rhode plant is very much on course to meet its revised commissioning date of February 2014," he said, adding that Biotricity planned to buy 100,000t of straw in 2013.
