Big interest in Mayo breeding group sales

Hogget prices at the recent annual sale held by Mayo Mule and Greyface breeders averaged €160/hd, while breeding ewe lamb prices sold in the €100-130 range for the bulk of the stock.

Non-breeding lamb prices averaged €80-100/hd.

Specialised breeding groups are benefiting from the renewed interest in sheep this autumn. With the downturn in the building sector, many farmers are back full-time and are looking at sheep as an enterprise to develop and expand.

The Mayo Mountain Blackface group was established six years ago to cater for customers who were finding it difficult to source big numbers of quality sheep and to highlight the qualities of the breed for both hill and lowland farmers.

The Mayo Connemara Blackface ram group have a number of sales coming up. All will be held at Connacht Gold, Ballinrobe. The dates of the sales are listed here:

Mayo Mule and Greyface sale on Friday, September 17 -- 200 hoggets and 1000 ewe lambs;

Mayo Mountain Blackface group sale on Friday, September 24 -- 350 hoggets, 300 ewe lambs and 100 ewes;
