Belclare society meet demand with first sale of in-lamb ewes

The Belclare Sheep Society is to run its first in-lamb ewe sale on Monday, November 5, in response to demand from breeders.

The sale will follow a series of five ram sales during September, October and November.

The ram sales will take place in Roscommon Mart on Saturday, September 29, in Kilkenny Mart on Monday, October 1, Carnaross on Tuesday, October 2, Tullamore on Wednesday, October 3, and Portumna Mart on Tuesday, October 9.

Belclare Society secretary Michael Neenan said the society's ram sales so far in 2012 had been on a par with last year in terms of demand.

Michael can be contacted on 087 277 7721 for all enquiries relating to the ewe and ram sales.

Meanwhile, the Belclare stand at this year's National Ploughing Championships will, for the third year running, include a large 6m display in the sheep tunnel.

The society aims to showcase both pedigree and commercial stock so that sheep farmers can see at first hand the qualities and benefits of using a pedigree Belclare ram.

The Belclare exhibit will feature pedigree Belclare stock but also Belclare crosses with Suffolk, Cheviot and Scottish Blackface ewes in order to highlight the breed's potential for commercial crossbreds.

Members of the Belclare Society will be on hand for the duration of the event to answer questions.

They will also provide information about the breed to potential new breeders and commercial farmers.
