2017 marks the 20 anniversary of the Certified Irish Hereford Prime.

The brand was established in 1997 by the formation of a Hereford Beef Producer Group supported by the Irish Hereford Breed Society with cattle processed at the ABP facility in Nenagh.

Since then, Certified Irish Hereford Prime has developed a reputation as a premium product where it’s taste and tenderness is highly regarded by many of Europe’s leading retailers, food service providers and Michelin starred restaurants.

The Hereford breed was established over two and a half centuries ago in Herefordshire in England and is now the breed of choice in all major beef production countries. Introduced to Ireland in 1775, the Hereford animal is recognised as an animal with the temperament, quality and performance to suit both Irish farming conditions and tastes.

Irish Hereford Prime beef is produced in a sustainable grass based system where Hereford cattle mature earlier and finish more economically at lower weights.

Commenting on the development of Certified Irish Hereford Prime over the past 20 years, Niall O’Mahony, Chairman of Irish Hereford Prime said,

“We are proud of how Certified Irish Hereford Prime has evolved to be one of Europe’s leading beef brands and are grateful for the long term collaboration and support from ABP on that journey.

"The preference for our beef at both restaurant and retail level is testament to the high standards operated by our producers and the unique grass based production system here in Ireland. I would also like to acknowledge the commitment and support of our farmer suppliers who have played an instrumental role in making Irish Hereford Prime the brand it is today.”

Irish Hereford Prime has won a number of awards for excellence over the past number of years including the prestigious award of “Best Steak in the World” from German food magazine “Beef!” To win this award Irish Hereford Prime beat competition from eight major beef producing countries, including New Zealand Wagyu, Argentinian Angus, Italian Florentine, French Charolais, American Bison and German Simmental.

Since 1997, the Irish Hereford Prime beef Producer Group now has grown to over 3,500 members nationwide and their product is processed across all of ABP Food Group’s 6 Irish sites.
