Arla Foods joins auction

Swedish-Danish co-operative Arla Foods is to join Fonterra's online auction, Global Dairy Trade (GDT), from April next year.

The co-op will begin offering skim milk powder on the 65th trading event on April 3.

First established in 2008, the GDT auctions run online twice a month.

Warning for dog owners

Shane McEntee, the Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, has warned of the severe penalties for owners of dogs that attack livestock.

Negligent dog owners may be found liable for damages and costs in civil actions and dogs may be shot by the owners of animals subjected to attacks.

The minister appealed to owners to ensure their dogs are kept under control at all times to avoid suffering and death to sheep and lamb flocks.

ICSA president Gabriel Gilmartin has urged the Department of Agriculture to issue 50pc of the Single Farm Payment to those who haven't received any payment yet.

Mr Gilmartin said those farmers were primarily those who had already had inspections on their farms and were still waiting for maps to be digitised or paperwork to be processed.

Milk on the up in Brazil

Brazil is expected to spend more money per capita on milk than developed economies by the end of 2015.

Milk production in the South American nation is currently on the increase, with a 2pc rise forecast for next year, bringing total production to 31.3bn litres.

The period between August 2010 and August this year saw an increase of 6.3pc in milk production.
