Gardaí on routine patrol stopped van and trailer full of assorted tools at Irishtown Mountmellick at 5am last Saturday November 4.

Gardai said some items have already been identified as being stolen in Leixlip in September.

They are encouraging members of the public to alert anyone they may know, especially builders, who have had tools stolen recently to the discovery.

Even if you do not see your property Gardai have said it would be worth your while making an appointment and having a look at all the items in person.

Any person who thinks they recognise anything from pictures to email laoisoffaly.crimeprevention@garda.ie

Gardai envisage having an open day in due course.

In May, Gardaí  recovered more than €50,000 worth of stolen tools and equipment which was destined be sold on the black market here.

The stolen industrial power tools and gardening machinery were stolen in the UK before being brought here to sell.

The goods were discovered in two vehicles, one of which was also stolen, at Dublin Port.

While data on the amount of tools reported stolen in recent years is not available, security experts say there has been a "definite increase" in burglaries and thefts.

John Kinsella, managing director of Accura Security Products Limited, said Ireland is suffering a "crimewave of epidemic proportions."

"You just have to look at Facebook or LinkedIn on a daily basis and you will see that theft of tools from vehicles and on sites is a really serious matter and it’s happening constantly," he told Independent.ie.
