Kilkenny lands located at Goresbridge, 6km from Gowran and 20km from Kilkenny city sold at auction last week. Auctioneer Ed Donohoe described the farm as “the best land you’ll ever walk”.

Donohoe sold the 42ac farm at auction last week making €685,000 or over €16,500/ac.

The property which exceeded the initial guide price of €10,000 to €12,000/ac is on a vein of limestone ground and includes a limestone quarry reputed to have 2m tons of a limestone deposit. According to Ed Donohoe the quarry is still registered and could be reactivated.

With access to a cul-de-sac and a lane, the lands are laid out in four fields of tillage in the best of heart.

The auction opened when Mr Donohoe accepted an opening bid of €350,000. Four different bidders showed interest at various points in the sale as the price climbed in increments of €25,000 until the price on offer reached €500,000. Bidding continued in tranches of €5,000 and €10,000 until the price on offer reached €605,000 and the place was put on the market.

With two bidders remaining the auction continued until the amount hit €685,000 and the holding  was bought by an accountant believed to be acting for a local man with equestrian interests.
