Abuse video halts exports

Australian livestock exports to Egypt have been suspended following the release of footage showing extreme animal cruelty during the slaughter process.

The video was obtained by an animal welfare organisation called Animals Australia, which gave the footage to the Australian department of agriculture.

Australia ships approximately 700,000 cattle to Egypt annually.

The Australian livestock industry is struggling to explain how the abuse happened in facilities it had previously described as "state of the art".

Australia's livestock export council CEO, Alison Penfold, admitted that the footage revealed "appalling practices during the slaughter process".
