A better week for all stock bar bulls

It was a relatively good week at the cattle marts, with almost all categories apart from the light bulls showing positive movement.

In-calf suckler heifers and cows continue to be in strong demand, especially the nicer quality continental types, with prices for the heifers running from €1,450 up towards €2,000/hd, while the cows made from €1,200-1,500.

Dairy stock calving in the spring were making from €1,000-1,300 in the main. Continental steers up to 500kg were making from €1.90-2.55/kg, with the heavier lots selling from €1.90-2.35/kg.

Plainer sorts made from €1.35-1.70/kg. Most of the heifers sold between €2.00-2.40/kg, with the lesser quality types moving at €1.70-1.90/kg. Bulls under 300kg were selling for €2.10-2.80/kg.

The 300-400kg lots made from €2.10-2.60, while heavier bulls sold for €2.05-2.45/kg. A range from €1.50-1.90/kg was buying the poorer types. The coloured heifer weanlings generally made from €2.10-2.80/kg. Blacker types were making from €1.80-1.95/kg.

Ballinakill had only 300 cattle on offer and therefore had plenty of customers, which led to a good lively trade. Heavy bullocks of 700-900kg were selling for €1.80-2.25/kg.

Forward continental stores made from €1.75-2.35/kg. Beef heifers sold for €1.80-2.30/kg, while the stores made from €1.65-2.10/kg. Weanling bulls were making from €1.85-2.20/kg.

There were more than 1,000 cattle on offer at Balla Mart. Good quality store heifers which were improved on the previous week.

Heavy bullocks were making €600-900 with their weight or €1.40-2.72/kg, while lighter plainer types were moving at €500-650 with the €/kg or €1.03-3.02/kg. Light heifers under 400kg made from €1.87-2.91/kg.

A two-year-old Limousin cow due to calve next February topped the suckler section at €2,080, while the best cull cow, a nine-year-old 910kg Limousin made €1,850. There were 200 weanlings on offer last Saturday. Light bulls under 350kg sold for €500-600 with their weight or €1.68-3.11/kg.

Heavier bulls ranged from €1.43-3.33/kg. The heifers under 350kg made from €2.11-3.55/kg or €400-590 with the weight. Heavy heifers made from €500-600 with the €/kg or €2.22-2.30/kg.

Trade was quieter at Dowra Mart for the 610 cattle on offer and plainer cattle proved harder to sell. Weanling heifers under 300kg made from €2.00-3.00/kg. Heavier heifers sold from €1.70-3.00/kg.


Weanling bulls under 300kg made from €1.80-3.00/kg. Some of the very fancy light calves were making up to €3.50/kg. Bulls over 300kg made from €1.50-2.70/kg.

Store bullocks sold from €1.60-2.40/kg. In-calf suckler heifers showing a bit of quality made from €1,400-1,780. Cows with a calf at foot varied from €1,100-1,550 each.

Carnew had a very big sale, with 850 on offer, and had a good steady trade. Beef and forward store bullocks made from €650-1,050 over the weight.

Stores ranged from €250-850 with the €/kg. Beef heifers moved at €550-970 with the weight, while the stores sold for €270-755 with the €/kg.

Feeders sold back to €1/kg. In-calf suckler cows varied from €850-1,350. Dairy heifers calving February/March were making from €1,050-1,200.

Trade was firm for the 730hd on offer at Kilkenny Mart. Steers over 600kg were selling for €1.75-2.30/kg or €600-860 over the weight.

The 400-600kg types ranged from €1.70-2.45/kg or €400-820 with the €/kg.

Lighter types made from €1.70-2.80/kg. Stores moved at €1.50-3.08/kg or €320-550 with their weight. Friesian cull cows made from €0.70-1.75/kg. The continental cows ranged from €1.30-2.10/kg.

Top class bulls over 600kg up in Raphoe made from €580-915 over the weight. Beef bullocks sold for €580-785 over. Stores ranged from €390-890 with the weight. Beef heifers moved at €565-1,100 over.

At Mayo/Sligo Mart, the good continental stores between 370-500kg were making from €2.50-2.76/kg.

Heifers over 400kg made from €2.00-2.56/kg. The best of the lighter heifers made up to €2.90/kg. Cull cows peaked at €1,100.

The top suckler sold for €1,500.

At Ballymote Mart, the bullocks under 400kg were making from €250-545 over the weight. Lots between €400-500kg sold from €325-735 with their weight. Heavier lots made up to €600 over the €/kg.

The 400-600kg types were selling for €320-620 over. Suckler cows ranged from €1,165-1,600.

The upper end of this range was for a Limousin heifer due to calve at the end of February. Backward store cows were selling from €300 under the weight to €100 under. Heavy cows made from €250-515 with the €/kg.

Weanling heifers under 300kg were making from €240-500 with the €/kg. Lots weighing from 300-400kg made from €290-560 over.

Weanling bulls between 200-300kg were making from €260-560 over the weight.

The 300-400kg bulls made from €350-600 over the €/kg. Heavier lots made up to €525 over.
