€66/ha cost of fragmentation
Tillage farmers with fragmented holdings could spend over €20,000 in additional travelling costs, delegates at the Teagasc tillage conference were told.
Fragmentation is a major cost for tillage farms, according to machinery expert Dermot Forrestal.
He told the conference that for a 320ha grower, farming 22 blocks radiating over 30km from the home base, the extra travelling expense averaged €66/ha or a total of €20,825 annually for the business.
The extra costs included fuel, time, depreciation, and repairs and maintenance.
