The final dispersal sale of the pedigree Holstein Clongowes Wood College herd took place on farm on Saturday, as 175 young stock were auctioned off.

Auctioneer Michael Taaffe said that a strong trade saw a top price of 2,550gns paid by a Northern buyer for a Windbrook bulling heifer.

The average price for 63 springing heifers was 1,424gns, with 69 bulling heifers averaging 1,046gns.

Autumn-born heifer calves made up to 2,100gns, with the average closer to 1,000gns.

Earlier last week, the second half of the Clongowes 300-cow herd was sold. Top price was 4,400gns for a five year old VG88 Dictator cow. Springing and fresh calved heifers and cows averaged close to 2,000gns. Spring calved cows averaged 1,460gns.

The Kildare farm, which is owned by the Jesuit order, will now be leased to a consortium of southern dairy farmers.
