€125,000 in fines for Drummonds

Leading feed merchant Drummonds Ltd has been fined a total of €125,000 and ordered to pay expenses of €19,600 and legal costs to the Health and Safety Authority as a result of an incident in 2009 which resulted in the deaths of two workers.

Drummonds' employees Terry Brennan, 19, and Paul Farrell, 34, lost their lives in an accident at the company's facility at Knockbridge, Co Louth, in August 2009. The men died from a lack of oxygen in the atmosphere while carrying out repair work on machinery in an elevator pit. Drummonds had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 8 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 before Judge Michael O'Shea in Dundalk Circuit Criminal Court.
