1,000l of water for 1l of milk
With estimates that it takes up to 1,000 litres of water to produce each litre of milk in sun-soaked Saudi Arabia, Bord Bia are gearing up for a major marketing campaign in the Middle East.
Irrigation to produce fodder for dairy cows has helped deplete 70pc of Saudi's non-renewable groundwater and dairy producers are now being forced to turn to expensive desalinised water to keep up with demand for milk that is growing at a rate of 6pc a year.
Purchasers are increasingly turning to milk powders to satisfy demand, which presents huge opportunities for Irish exporters. Bord Bia is planning a marketing offensive in the Kingdom, which should be rolled out later this year.
