Former Paddy Power chief executive Andy McCue has started his new role as head of UK-based Restaurant Group.

Restaurant Group ousted its former chief executive Danny Breithaupt after two years in the role. The company announced his departure last month and their intention to replace him with Mr McCue.

Mr McCue is heading up a company that has seen its share price fall by as much as 45pc this year. The firm, which owns the likes of the Frankie and Benny's and Chiquito chains, has faced increased competition from food-led pubs and other branded restaurant chains.

The ex-betting giant boss rose up the ranks at Paddy Power in various leading roles on the retail side of the business before becoming CEO.

Paddy Power merged with Betfair in February in a massive €8bn deal that has seen it begin trading on the Irish and London stock exchanges.

Upon merging Mr McCue become the firm's chief operating officer while then Betfair boss Breon Corcoran became chief executive of the newly formed entity.
