Licenses for 4,504 new private cars were issued last month, an increase of 20.6pc compared to August 2012.

The licence figures for used private cars, meanwhile, saw a hike of 48.1pc to 4,422, according to a recently released report from the Central Statistics Office. 

For August 2013, CSO figures show the total number of all vehicles licensed rose by 34.1pc to 12,519 compared with 9,335 for the corresponding month last year.  

Over the first seven months of 2013, however, there has been a fall of 8pc to 63,313 new private cars licensed compared to the same period in 2012.

Volkswagen was the most popular make for new private cars last month, with last month’s brand leader Ford falling in third place behind Toyota.

In July this year, 9,306 new private cars were licensed, climbing 51pc from 6,164 in July 2012.

In other figures from the CSO today, industrial production decreased by 8.9pc on a monthly and on an annual basis. 

Hi-tech and chemical industry sectors decreased 9.1pc in July 2013 compared with the figures from the previous month.
