Ireland's biggest company CRH is to start looking for a new finance director after it said the current holder of the role, Maeve Carton, will lead a new strategic function from the start of 2016.

The buildings materials group said Ms Carton will become group transformation director, identifying and implementing the optimum financial and business model for the group in the years ahead.

A statement from the firm said: "In this new role, Maeve will drive improved shareholder returns by identifying further synergies, efficiencies and cash generation opportunities as CRH continues to grow and acquire new businesses.

"She will report to, and work closely with, the group chief executive, Albert Manifold, and will continue to contribute directly to the board as an executive director."

A search will shortly commence to appoint a new Finance Director for the Group and this process is expected to be completed by year-end.

Ms Carton will continue as finance director until her replacement has been appointed, supporting an effective transition process.
