Howth Castle and demesne in Dublin has been sold by the Gaisford-St Lawrence family after more than eight centuries.

Buyer Tetrarch Capital will now work on a masterplan for the 530-acre property which is likely to include a luxury hotel, a championship golf course and new leisure and retail elements.

Julian Gaisford-St Lawrence said his family were grateful to have owned the Howth Estate for the last 840 years, but lacked the resources to maximise its potential.

"The sale to Tetrarch will enable that potential to be reached, and we know that Michael McElligott and his team will do so in a manner that respects the heritage and interests of the local community."
