At a time of spiralling house prices and high rents, it has become almost impossible for many families to afford a home. In its latest quarterly report this week, the property website Daft.ie said rent prices nationally rose at an annual rate of almost 6pc in the second quarter of the year.

At the other end of the property ladder, Ireland’s biggest private landlord, Ires Reit, is quite capable of buying over 800 homes in a single transaction, as it did this time two years ago when it paid €285m for hundreds of apartments in Dublin and Cork.
