A new building standards regulator must focus on consumer protection

The Government’s proposal to establish a Building Standards Regulator, with powers to inspect buildings, materials and companies, is welcome, but must focus on protecting consumers from the dangers of the switch to “self-certification”.

The Building Control Acts of 1990-1997, moved the responsibility for compliance with standards, to the designers, builders and owners of buildings, and away from experienced local authorities.
