Celebrations gathering pace

AS the summer ramps up and tourists start to arrive in force, it's time for some in the industry to start planning for next year.

To that end, Leitrim County Council has launched a programme of celebrations to mark Carrick-on-Shannon's 400th anniversary since receiving the town charter from James I.

The festival programme will be held throughout 2013 incorporating the arts, music and sport.

In tandem with 'The Gathering' initiative, Carrick-on-Shannon natives from all over the globe will be encouraged to return to the town along with tourists from within and outside of Ireland to join in the celebrations.

As part of the launch, a dedicated festival brochure and website were also unveiled,, which will provide the latest information on news and events taking place through the 2013 celebrations.

Speaking at the launch of the festival programme, Tourism Minister Leo Varadkar said: "This event features a wide range of events and attractions. Festivals like this will play a crucial role in the run-up to Gathering Ireland 2013, the year-long event taking place across Ireland throughout next year."

Meanwhile, Isaacs Hostel is in the process of appointing an ambassador to travel across Europe promoting Ireland as a leisure destination of choice.

The Isaacs ambassador campaign began with a competition to source an ambassador to represent the famous hostel across Europe.

Applicants were required to submit a 300-word piece on 'What it means to be an ambassador for Ireland' and a judging panel is now interviewing the finalists. The winner of the competition will be paid to spend August inter-railing across Europe, promoting Ireland and its world-famous friendly culture in every city they visit.

With the assistance of Tourism Ireland, interviews will be secured with travel bloggers and journalists to promote the winner's campaign to encourage backpackers and the youth market to visit Ireland.

Another key factor will be the use of social media. The ambassador will be responsible for contributing to the Isaacs Hostel Facebook page and encouraging fellow travellers to engage with the page. Additionally, they will blog about each of their experiences in an effort to develop a following of fellow backpackers, interested in their adventures.

Niamh Browne, marketing director of Isaacs Hostel, said: "Euro 2012 is a perfect example of just how effective the Irish are at marketing our country. They made international headlines by simply being their upbeat, cheerful selves, even in the face of a Spanish onslaught! This campaign seeks to develop this notion by providing the youth and backpacker markets with a taste of what Ireland has to offer."

TRIATHLON Ireland and Kinetica Sports have expanded their current sponsorship deal to see Kinetica Sports, part of the Carbery Group, receive naming rights of the Sprint and Olympic Distance National Championships.
