Farmers 'shouldn't pay property tax'

Aideen Sheehan

FARMS must be excluded from any new property tax in the forthcoming Budget, the Irish Farmers Association said yesterday.

IFA president John Bryan met the Taoiseach Brian Cowen yesterday to put the organisation's demands for measures needed to support farming.

The IFA said that new figures showed that agrifood exports were up 14pc this year which was contributing to economic recovery through increased exports and jobs.

"Proper funding for all farm schemes is critical in stimulating production and maintaining rural jobs," Mr Bryan said.

While farm prices had improved, farming remained a low-income sector and exports were facing further pressure from the recent weakening of sterling against euro.
