Additional childcare supports, hundreds of extra Tusla workers and family resource centres are all on the agenda for Budget 2018, Children's Minister Katherine Zappone has said.

Minister Zappone said she is "very happy" with what her department has been allocated by Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe.

She said: "I am very happy with the budget that I have received for children, for childcare and also for the Tusla Child and Family Agency.

"Approximately 20,000 three and four-year-olds will benefit from additional free childcare.

"In relation to Tusla, I'm delighted that I have secured enough money to secure an additional 300 workers to protect and care for our children.

"There will also be a very big initiative for family resource centres that will impact communities throughout the country.

She also defend implementing tax cuts instead of using the money to invest in infrastructure in public services.

She said: "I think the tax cuts are modest, I'm going to listen to the analysis of what Minister Donohoe presents to us, which from I can see is care."
