Criminal legal aid reduced
CRIMINAL legal aid will be reduced by €5m next year and €10m over the course of a full year under new cost- cutting measures announced in the Budget.
Solicitors and barristers earned €57,596,267 between them last year through providing the State-funded criminal legal-aid scheme, despite two reductions on rates imposed by Government.
Barristers earned a total of €20.4m in 2009, while solicitors received a total of €37m.
Five legal firms earned more than €1m under the scheme which will be reduced as part of a broad package of measures designed to reduce legal costs under the four-year EU/IMF programme.
