It was the first time since those first few brief hours after taking office on June 27 last that this three-party "calamity coalition" showed a clear unity of purpose.

The series of controversies, foul-ups and unforced errors over those first 110 days distracted a lot from what should have been going on with our politics. Then the astonishing spending increases of €17.75bn for 2021, and the fretting over Covid-19 and a new Brexit cliff edge, also masked this signal change of political landscape.
