Leo Varadkar will be closer to Berlin than to Boston today - he's due to meet re-elected German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the German capital with talks expected to focus on Brexit and Thursday's EU leaders' summit.

That will include proposals to be formally published tomorrow by the European Commission on taxation of digital companies. Ireland and Germany are on opposite sides of that debate, which officials here see as a potential threat to jobs and corporate tax income.

On Thursday, EU leaders are due to meet in Brussels to sign off on Brexit guidelines, paving the way for further talks. The threat to EU-US trade, UK-Russia tensions, and digital taxation are all on the agenda.

It's a big week in the world economy too, with the selection of the new governor at the People's Bank of China, the US Federal Reserve likely to announce a first interest-rate increase of 2018, and G20 central bankers and finance ministers meeting for the first time this year in Buenos Aires, beginning today and against a background of a US threatened tariff and trade war.
